The Graduate

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

The graduate showed how society valued education, family life, and other societal importance. I was one of the first movies to capture youth rebellion. The famous band Simon and Garfunkel performed the soundtrack to the movie, and made  “Mrs. Robinson  number one on the Billboard charts in 1986.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content. You may use the library or the internet. Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.

According to http://www.filmsite.org/grad.html , The graduate depicted the times of 1960's well,  There was already a growing dissatisfaction with the status quo and middle-class values, and the breakthrough film mirrored that anarchic mood perfectly for America's youth of the 60s during the escalation of the Vietnam War. Also The film was adapted first for the stage (at London's Gielgud Theatre), and then premiered on Broadway in early April of 2002, with Kathleen Turner reprising her role as Mrs. Robinson, along with Jason Biggs and Alicia Silverstone in the other major roles.By reading the article I learned that many viewers of this the film were unaware that Harold Lloyd's race to the rescue to prevent the wedding of a girl he loves earlier appeared in the silent-era film comedian's influential film Girl Shy which was in 1924.
The film was nominated for a total of seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor-Dustin Hoffman, Best Actress -Anne Bancroft, Best Supporting Actress Katharine Ross, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. The film won only one award - Best Director.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?

I agree with the article because the film did a good of depicting the average young adult experience after college. Not only youths of the 60's but youth of today (2015). The wedding scene was very dramatic and suspenseful, hoping that he made it in time to stop his true love from marrying a man she didn't love. A great ending to a love story.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.

Nichols did a great job at capturing a realistic insight of a young adult's life. Although in a few scenes I felt were a bit lenient. For example, Elaine father and Benjamin in the apartment that Benjamin rented; as a father who find out that a boy you watched grow up slept with your wife and is now dating your daughter and speaking of marrying her, I expected a stricter and more chaotic threat between the Elaine father and Benjamin. There was interesting cutting and camera shots when Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson first started their affair. By using the back and forth scene of Benjamin in the pool and the on the bed with Mrs. Robinson save time and made it interesting.

Touch of Evil Screening Report

Touch of Evil Movie Poster

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

What was discussed in class was a background of the film and what it entails. We became aware of the opening being 3:22 tracking shot which is considered one of the greatest long-takes in cinema history. Also, the controversy over the main character playing a Mexican was noted in the discussion.  Recognizing the difference between soft and hard light in the film was noticeable because of what was discussed in class prior to the film playing. Although there is allot of lighting styles to choose from the as I watch the film the producer did a good job in choosing which lighting goes with what scene. It was different to what I am use to seeing in movies but it worked.

 2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.  Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.

 http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/great-movie-touch-of-evil-1958

The Content of the article focuses on the re-modification of the film and its relationship to Orson Welles original idea.  The article addresses that the destinies
of all of the main characters are tangled from beginning to end, and the photography makes that point by trapping them in the same shots, or tying them together through cuts that match and resonate. The story moves not in a straight line, but as a series of loops which was because of the fact that Universal studios took the film from Orson Welles and removed some things.  The article also points out the 58 page letter that allow Welles to get his point across and stop the confusion of what the film really was about. The final and original film was redirected by Rick Schmidlin and edited by Walter Murch. Although the film wasn't fully what Welles originally intended it to be, it still showed the majority of what he envisioned.

 3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?

By reading the article it got me thinking of all the problems that goes on before creating a final piece of production. Now I am interested in viewing the other versions of the film that may still be out there. Welles who played Hank Quinlan in the film was a bulky man in the film, but according to the article I learned that he added more padding under his clothing to make him even bulker and the placement of the camera angle to help as well.  Going into details of one of the investigator (Vargas ) , reading the article I found out something I did not really pay attention to or understood well in the film, that is that the hotel that Vargas wife was checked into was owned by Gandi family. A ironic thing perhaps.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the directo

From the history given in class about the film and how the lighting was placed in the scenes it was an insight of the work producers had to put in in order to establish a good production, especially how they envision it to be. Welles wrote a very interesting story, there are few things that the article I read suggested and I would agree with and that is during the bomb scene. It would've ben better to hear the off-screen explosion first, stay on Mike and Susan Vargas as they run to the burning car, and then cut; instead of going to the bomb first and then to the couple. The plot and the struggle between the two main characters Vargas and Quanlin were suspenseful and well played. I would like to see the other versions of the film and compare.

Casablanca

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

Cassablanca a well written film whom was taking from a play and expanded. The idea of taking a play "Everybody comes to Rick's" and expanding on it to make something more grand was a great idea which saves time. Also the actor Bogart was right for his role taking into consideration the time of which the film was made; Bogart wealthy and navy background went hand in hand with his on screen role. Cassablanca seemed very lively as though where all the action and chaos occurred, which was ironic since it was where people escaped to in order to get one step closer to America and peace. The affair that went on in Paris between Llsa and Rick while Laszlo her husband was at a concentration camp was unfair to both men and knowing this before the movie began helped me as a viewer understand why she did not meet Rick at the train station to elope and escape.

2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content.

http://www.filmsite.org/casa.html   :ARTICLE LINK

The article "Cassablanca 1942" by Tim Dirks AMC filmsite goes further into detail of the awards, prestige and themes of the film. Explaining why the film has two dates ,that it is because its limited premiere was in 1942, but the film did not play nationally, or in Los Angeles, until 1943. The article tells its readers about Presidents such as Reagan and Roosevelt. Roosevelt  screened the film at the White House on the last day of it released year 1942,, and hosted Casablanca conference in 1943 which was also a summit meeting which Roosevelt broke US-Vichy relations with two French leaders. This is irony to the film which has french relations .  By reading this article I also learned that the film could have won many more awards and nominations in the year 1942 but because it was not formally released until the year 1943 it was ineligible for any awards.

. 3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?

The article change the way I viewed the characters in the film and wonder what if. I say this because many of the roles played in the film,  according to the article was originally entitled to be played by someone else. For example President Reagan was to be in the film but could not. Also pianist Sam's role (portrayed by "Dooley" Wilson - who was actually a drummer) was originally to be taken by a female (either Hazel Scott, Lena Horne, or Ella Fitzgerald). I enjoyed the role of the pianist Sam and could not see him as a woman. He were more of a common vision for both Rick and Llsa, by him being a man took out any awkwardness of Rick being between two women. Also the film portrayed a diverse content thus having a black Pianist made it worked perfectly.

 4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.

My opinion of the film is that the director chose the right timing to produce and release the film , although the confusion of the date (1942 and 1943 ) may have been a bit confusing the film success was still prevalent. As I watch the film i saw many diversity in the actors , from white, black, Chinese , french etc. Also the love triangle that was going on between Rick Llsa and Laszlo added romance to the tense atmosphere of people trying to escape, some dying, threats being made and the mellow Rick who took everything as nothing except his love for Llsa. Overall I enjoyed the film and all of its many characters , it was a chaotic, romantic, frantic, mysterious work of art. BRAVO!!!
