1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
The graduate showed how society valued education, family life, and other societal importance. I was one of the first movies to capture youth rebellion. The famous band Simon and Garfunkel performed the soundtrack to the movie, and made “Mrs. Robinson number one on the Billboard charts in 1986.
2) Find a related article (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) and summarize the content. You may use the library or the internet. Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.
According to http://www.filmsite.org/grad.html , The graduate depicted the times of 1960's well, There was already a growing dissatisfaction with the status quo and middle-class values, and the breakthrough film mirrored that anarchic mood perfectly for America's youth of the 60s during the escalation of the Vietnam War. Also The film was adapted first for the stage (at London's Gielgud Theatre), and then premiered on Broadway in early April of 2002, with Kathleen Turner reprising her role as Mrs. Robinson, along with Jason Biggs and Alicia Silverstone in the other major roles.By reading the article I learned that many viewers of this the film were unaware that Harold Lloyd's race to the rescue to prevent the wedding of a girl he loves earlier appeared in the silent-era film comedian's influential film Girl Shy which was in 1924.
The film was nominated for a total of seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor-Dustin Hoffman, Best Actress -Anne Bancroft, Best Supporting Actress Katharine Ross, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. The film won only one award - Best Director.
3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
I agree with the article because the film did a good of depicting the average young adult experience after college. Not only youths of the 60's but youth of today (2015). The wedding scene was very dramatic and suspenseful, hoping that he made it in time to stop his true love from marrying a man she didn't love. A great ending to a love story.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director.
Nichols did a great job at capturing a realistic insight of a young adult's life. Although in a few scenes I felt were a bit lenient. For example, Elaine father and Benjamin in the apartment that Benjamin rented; as a father who find out that a boy you watched grow up slept with your wife and is now dating your daughter and speaking of marrying her, I expected a stricter and more chaotic threat between the Elaine father and Benjamin. There was interesting cutting and camera shots when Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson first started their affair. By using the back and forth scene of Benjamin in the pool and the on the bed with Mrs. Robinson save time and made it interesting.
